Fire Extinguishers come in different shapes and sizes and there are different types of fire extinguishers to provide protection against different classifications of fire.

Not all types of fire extinguishers work for all types of fire.

For example,

Class A fire (fire in wood, paper textile etc) can be extinguished effectively by ABE dry powder extinguishers, water extinguishers and foam extinguishers.

Class B fire (fuel fire) can be extinguished by using ABE dry powder extinguishers, foam extinguishers and Co2 extinguishers.

Class E fire (electrical fire) can be extinguished by using Co2 extinguishers and ABE extinguishers.

Class F fire (fats fire): Where heating of cooking oil is involved, allowance will need to be made for Wet Chemical extinguishers with Class F rating.

FIRE IN FRYING PAN OR DEEP FRYER: For Fires in Frying pan with oil, NEVER use water to put out fire as it becomes very dangerous and it will produce the ball of fire instantly. It can lead to fatal accidents. In this situation wet chemical extinguisher must be used

Water extinguishers and foam extinguishers MUST NOT be used to put out electric fire as it can electrocute the user. Foam is a good conductor of electricity. Dry powder extinguisher and Co2 extinguishers are best performers in this situation.

During the inspection and servicing of fire extinguishers, as a provider, it is also our duty of care to advise our clients of the compliance of extinguishers in terms of design, coverage, size, and types of fire extinguishers and to report accordingly.

Compliance is important for safety. It is also important for council certification, occupancy certificate, Annual Fire Safety Statement, insurance coverage etc.
